I’ve had many hair styles and colours over the years and I’d say the colour now is as close to my natural colour as it has ever been.
I remember being younger, flicking through all the glossy magazines, wishing I had long, dark, bouncy hair, as glossy as Cheryl Cole’s (a girl can dream!)
So when I was 17 I decided to turn to the dark side and have an all over brunette colour. One thing I have always stuck to when changing my hair is having it done professionally at the hairdressers. I have never bought a box dye and coloured it myself and I thank my mum for never letting me!
For the last 4 years I have been visiting my local Umberto Giannini salon and I either go for a balayage style or half a head of highlights. The colour now is more of a mousey brown with a lighter colour through the ends. I’ve recently had it chopped into a long bob style, meaning its much more manageable to look after and feels so much thicker and healthier.
To look after the colour in my hair and keep the condition healthy I follow a strict routine and only use the best products that work for my hair. Taking care of your hair isn’t just about what you put on your hair, it involves drinking plenty of water, following a healthy diet, turning the temperature in the shower down to cold whilst you’re washing your conditioner off, not sitting out in the sun without heat protector spray and not swimming in too much chlorine (a spa lover’s worst nightmare.)
I’ll start the week on a Monday morning by washing my hair, using my trusty Umberto Giannini Thicktastic shampoo and conditioner. I have been using the Umberto Giannini thicktastic range for over a year now and can honestly say it’s the best shampoo and conditioner I have used. It suits my hair so well and I have noticed my hair is visibly thicker since using it. I wrote a full blog post on my experience with the range here.
Another important step in my haircare routine is a purple shampoo. Although my hair isn’t bleach blonde, I love the fresh toned look you get when you leave the hairdressers and I use purple shampoo to give it more of an ashy tone. I tend to wash my hair every other day to keep it looking fresh.
On Wednesdays (we hair mask!)
Wednesdays and Weekends I treat my hair to a hair mask. There are so many hair masks I love, I usually look for something thick and creamy for nourishment. I leave it in overnight on a Wednesday and wash out the next morning, and I usually leave it in for a couple of hours whilst at the spa over the weekend… Umberto have an amazing mask in their indulge range.. I’m waiting (and praying) for the day they bring out a mask in their Thicktastic range *please happen soon*
I tend to style my hair most days. My favourite style at the moment is using my GHD stylers to create loose bouncy curls – the closest I can get to the salon blowdry look. One of my goals in life is to be able to have weekly blowdrys! I just love the feel of freshly blowdried bouncy curls. Before blowdrying my hair I have started to use a volumising mousse, I find this adds volume and bounce to my hair, then I use my GHD blow-dry brush and hairdryer.
To protect my hair from heat I use a moisturising serum. Not only does this help keep my hair hydrated, but I find it helps my curls stay in better as I don’t like to use hairspray on my hair. Serums that double up as heat protectants are great. I usually look for one that delivers heat protection up to 230 degrees to prevent split ends, minimises breakage and aids drying time to leave hair silky soft.
I’m not sure whats next for my hair, whether I’ll keep it short, or grow it back out again, but I do know that thanks to my strict haircare routine, whatever I decide to do, I can do it with confidence that my hair is in the best condition it can be.
